Top 5 in the News – March 2014

 

March was Music Therapy awareness month. 31 days to celebrate how music nurtures healthier well-being and richer quality of life. Here is a range stories highlighting the diversity of music therapy.

March to support music therapy happens in Port Credit

The local band of young adults with special needs from Mississauga, Superfire, took part in an inaugural March for Music Therapy, raising awareness and funds for music therapy. The March, which took place across 14 communities, was sponsored by the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund and the Canadian Association for Music Therapy.

 

Shelter residents have night at the opera

Florida college students organized a lavish night at the opera for a group of 40 homeless residents. The residents enjoyed a night they will never forget. They were pampered with new outfits and hair and makeup and to dinner before they attended an opening of the students’ latest production. 

Music Therapy and Military Populations

In recognition of music therapy as a vital component of military treatment services, the American Music Therapy Association publishes a ground-breaking publication of Music Therapy and Military Populations: A Status Report and Recommendations on Music Therapy Treatment, Programs, Research, and Practice Policy.

 

Youth Creates a Music Therapy Program for Alzheimer’s Patients; Wins Gold Award

Girl Scout’s recognized Hale’s extraordinary leadership by honouring her with a Girl Scout Gold Award for beginning a music therapy program for residents of a local residential care center in 2012. A senior in high school, Hale researched musical requests and sourced and compiled a library of residents’ favourite artists including Elvis and Frank Sinatra.

 

Doctors Singing for Patients

In harmony, doctors in Southern India banded together to offer music as medicine in hospital. It is the first initiative of its kind in the area.
