Introducing Jacob

Meet Jacob

As we wrap up October as Down Syndrome Awareness month, we transition into Canada’s National Down Syndrome Awareness Week, 1 – 7 November 2013.

AMT is continuing to bring awareness to the genetic disorder by sharing a story of one of our clients who has Down syndrome. Jacob is one of AMT’s first clients, and his mother shares how Jacob has thrived with the support of music therapy service.

How old is Jacob?
My son is 5 ½ years old, and he was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth.

When did Jacob start music therapy?

We have been doing Music therapy for his speech and social skill development with Accent Music Therapy since early 2013, when Bill started Accent Music Therapy in a church basement.

What differences have you noticed with Jacob since he has started music therapy?
Music therapy helps keep Jacob stay on task. Since beginning therapy, Jacob has increased his ability to sit through a class, say many more words, and go through a daily routine from start to finish.

How do you feel music therapy helps Jacob develop and grow?
Even when Jacob has had a bad day at school or is very tired, he never shows it during the music sessions. The music keeps him focused, and his energy levels high. He just loves going. And, if Jacob does lose focus, Bill is great with bringing Jacob back on track, or adapts to Jacob’s direction. Bill loves working with kids and it shows. He is sincere in helping them, and I appreciate the dedication he has to Jacob (and all his other clients).

AMT is honoured to have such a positive impact on Jacob’s life, and to also have the support of his family.  We work with clients to adapt programs to individual needs and shared goals. Contact us to learn more.
